ARG: Mark Williams – CIRCUIT Artist Moving Image

Mark Williams is the Founder/Director of CIRCUIT, an arts agency based in Wellington.

CIRCUIT distributes over 1000 videos by 200 New Zealand artists from the 1970s to 2023. CIRCUIT’s activities include commissioning new works
, distributing works in curated programmes to galleries, film festivals and on the CIRCUIT website, publishing essays, interviews with artists, and podcasts. Since 2012 CIRCUIT has commissioned over 100 new films.

Before founding CIRCUIT, Mark Williams worked at the New Zealand Film Archive and LUX (UK). CIRCUIT was established to make the work of New Zealand artists working in moving image accessible to a national and international audience. Just as art history textbooks show a reproduction of a classical painting for research, study and enjoyment, the CIRCUIT website streams 1000 videos for free, which are presented as compressed files. CIRCUIT seeks not only to create visibility for artists’ work but also opportunities for scholarship, exhibition and income generation.

In this talk, Mark shares some Alternative Reality Gardening projects from the Circuit Library and discusses the organisation’s work cultivating moving image in NZ.
