My Special Places: Primary School Augmented Reality Project

Augmented Reality Environmental Integrated Curriculum Project - Primary School

AwhiWorld’s ‘My Special Places’ programme at Drury School, South Auckland created an augmented reality platform for students to identify and celebrate the special places and spaces that contribute to the spirit of their school. it was designed to foster a connection and strengthen the sense of belonging students had with their physical location.

AwhiCreatures took up residence in very special spots around the school. Spaces and places were identified by a whole school research exercise, then a smaller group of Enviroschools students created site and creature specific poems, stories and creative audio works. They also designed creature houses and gave the creatures their own site-specific skins.

The creatures resided in the specially built houses and were activated through mobile devices. Older students then guided parents and younger students around the creatures for Calf Club Day.

The programme was supported by Papakura Local Board and Auckland City Council’s Enviroschools Programme.
